Working offline

An underground car park should not stop you recording your trip.

The problem it solves

Shared cars often sleep exactly where there is no signal: underground car parks, closed garages, shared parking. That is precisely the moment when the driver has the odometer in front of them.

So you can enter the odometer, take the photos and confirm on the spot. Sending happens on its own once the connection is back.

Mobile app only. On iPhone and Android, Co-oto works offline for starting and ending a trip. The web version always needs a connection.

What works with no network

Action What happens
Opening the app It starts on the last known state of your group and your vehicles
Starting a trip Queued, then sent once the network is back
Ending a trip Queued. The cost is only worked out once it has been sent
Odometer, fuel gauge and inspection photos Kept on the phone and sent along with the trip
Scanning the QR Drive card The vehicle is recognised from the data already on the phone

What needs a connection

Action With no network
Reading the odometer automatically from the photo Unavailable: type the number in by hand, as usual
Booking, adding a fill-up or an expense Unavailable
The other screens in the app A screen tells you the page needs a connection

The scope is deliberately narrow: only what happens at the vehicle works offline. Anything else would mean guessing at the state of the group, and the risk would be showing figures that are wrong.

Once the network is back

Nothing for you to do. Sending starts as soon as the connection returns, or when you reopen the app.

  • The trip is written first, before anything else: a trip that physically took place must never be lost
  • Nothing is counted twice: if sending is interrupted, Co-oto checks the server state before acting
  • One send at a time, so no duplicates can appear

If somebody took the car in the meantime

You were offline and another member started their trip with the same vehicle. Your trip is still recorded, but Co-oto does not take the car back from the other member: their own trip would turn into a phantom trip with 0 km.

A banner then invites you to sort it out from the release vehicles screen.

Limits worth knowing

  • A trip started offline cannot be ended before it has been sent: ending relies on the trip, which does not exist on the server yet
  • Notifications to the other members and the news feed entry go out at the moment of sending, so with a delay
  • Until it has been sent, the cost of the trip appears nowhere: not in the logbook, not in the balance
