How does car sharing work as a family?
Family car sharing means one circle around the household's car, or cars: parents, adult children, sometimes grandparents. Each driver installs Co-oto on their own phone and sees the same shared calendar, so everyone knows who has the car, until when, and when it comes back. Trips are recorded from the odometer, so each person's share rests on miles that were actually driven.
Costs follow real use. The family agrees once on a rate per mile or kilometer, the app adds up each person's share, and fixed costs like insurance or maintenance can be split in the same proportion. Nobody makes a profit: what circulates reimburses real expenses. Parents can also require approval before a booking is confirmed, which helps when a new driver joins.
The free plan covers two drivers, one vehicle and five trips a month; a single subscription unlocks up to ten drivers and three vehicles for the whole circle. The first 21 days include every feature, without creating an account.

A circle is simply the people who share the car. Name it, and you are done.

Can my children use Co-oto for free?
They pay nothing. One subscription covers the whole circle and every other driver uses the app for free, from their own phone. The permanently free plan covers 2 drivers, 1 vehicle and 5 trips a month, which is enough for a couple. A family with three or more drivers needs Co-oto Plus, at 4.90 EUR a month for up to 10 drivers, whoever pays for it.

Yes. The person who set up the circle can require approval: a driver requests the car, and the booking is only confirmed once it is validated. The setting is available on every plan, including the free one, and can be switched off once the habit is there.

Managing several vehiclesHow are car expenses divided between family members?
By actual use. Every trip records the miles driven, so at the end of the month the app already knows each person's share. You agree once on a rate per mile, and you can also include the fixed costs of the car (insurance, maintenance, leasing) and split them in the same proportion. Nobody makes a profit: what circulates in the family reimburses real expenses.
What rate per mile is fair in your countryCan we just use the calendar without splitting costs?
Yes. A circle setting called “Bookings only” keeps the shared calendar and hides everything to do with money. You can also leave the rest in place and simply switch cost display off, for a car you share with no financial counterpart at all. Both settings can be changed at any time.
The circle settings, explainedDoes Co-oto replace our car insurance?
No. Co-oto organizes the sharing, it insures nothing. Before the first trip, check with your insurer who is covered to drive your car, what the deductible is in case of a claim, and who pays it. Write the answer into your circle charter, which every driver accepts before driving.
